I’ll never forget the first time I saw aerial silk artists at a Cirque de Soleil performance of ‘O’. As they descended effortlessly from the ceiling, twirling, flipping and dancing in complete fluidity, I knew that this was something special. Sadly, the hope that I would one day have a “silks experience” seemed remote at best. That is, until we discovered the aerial yoga offerings with Melissa Tung at Whole Life Balance, a one-stop-shop for holistic wellness on King West.
As we climbed into the silks for the first time at the beginning of our aerial yin yoga class, I knew that the experience was going to be amazing. Our lovely instructor, Melissa Tung, made us feel comfortable right away, and throughout the class, by giving us clear verbal instructions and on point demos. Oh, and we were also assured that the silks could hold an incredible tonnage of weight…yes, tonnage…which also put us at ease!
As a longtime yogi and practitioner of yin yoga, practicing yin yoga with silks took the experience to a whole new level. The silks allowed us to achieve inversions for lengthy periods of time without putting stress on our necks. They also made inversions accessible for everyone, not just the more advanced students. And if you look forward to savasana at the end of class, your mind will be blown by experiencing savasana while engulfed in the silk – a whole new sensory experience. By the way, we also got to try our hand at a couple of flips – which were completely doable for every student, even us first timers! The playfulness of somersaulting and flipping brought a light and fun element to the practice that I think we could all use a bit more of in our hectic lives.
So, let’s just say that we 100% suggest that you channel your inner Cirque de Soleil and hit up Whole Life Balance for an aerial yoga class very soon. Truly an incredible addition to any yoga/fitness practice.
