WTD’s Guide to Kicking that Summer Cold

Do you know that feeling when you wake up one morning with a scratch in your throat, a headache, a runny nose and a general feeling of ‘ugh’?  I’m talking about all of those telltale signs of the onset of a cold.  And, unfortunately, that’s how I woke up this morning.  The good news?  If you act quickly enough, it is often possible to kick that cold before it really gets going or, at the very least, reduce its length and severity.  Plus, the Toronto wellness scene can supply you with some pretty awesome tools to help the fight, whether you choose to use natural remedies exclusively or combine them with more traditional forms of cold medication.  The following are five of my current natural remedy go-tos, all of which I picked up today:

Greenhouse Juice Genius juice blend (cucumber, pineapple, celery, spinach, kale, lemon, E3 live and himalayan salt) and The Flu Shot (echinacea, reishi, codonopsis, astralagalus, oil of oregano and lemon) – Here at Well TO Do, you know we love our green juice.  Getting that blast of nutrients from the Genius green juice blend is one of the best things you can do to get yourself on the road to mend.  Couple that with The Flu Shot, which boosts immunity and helps with cold and flu treatment and prevention (love that it has oil of oregano, nature’s antibiotic, in the mix), and you’re sure to be feeling better before long.

The Honest Leaf Fresh tea blend – I am all about The Honest Leaf, a Toronto-based tea company that crafts all of its tea blends with organic and natural herbs, spices and tea leaves.  The Fresh blend combines green rooibos, lemongrass and ginger, designed to rejuvenate your immune system!

Bathorium ‘Doctor’s Orders’ Bath Bomb – I’m always a bath girl, but when I’m feeling under the weather nothing is quite as soothing as having a long, steamy soak in a very hot bath.  I’m obsessed with all of Bathorium’s Bath Bombs, but I use the ‘Doctor’s Orders’ Bathbomb when I need to shed that achy feeling that can come with a cold.  Its unique combination of oils (almond, coconut, frankincense, eucalyptus and peppermint, to name a few), sea salt, and aloe leaf, among others, is simply perfection.

Organic lemons – A childhood cold remedy of mine, hot lemon water is an absolute must, not only every morning to get the digestion going, but also multiple times a day while I am fighting off a cold.  Getting that influx of Vitamin C, along with the all-important hydration, is crucial.  I like to order lemons in my standing order with Mama Earth every week, so that I always have them on hand.

Eucalyptus essential oil face steam – For a stuffy (that’s the technical term) nose, I like to have a face steam using organic eucalyptus essential oil.  I fill my bathroom sink up with hot water, add a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil, cover my head with a towel and steam my face over the mixture.  When my sinuses are feeling particularly congested, this can often be a catalyst to loosen everything up, so to speak.  I get my eucalyptus essential oil from Noah’s Natural Foods.

Combine these wellness tools with a lot of rest and fluids, along with any recommended course of treatment by your family physician, and I am confident that you will be back on your feet in no time.  Get well soon! – Erin
